Perseus
Perseus was the son of Danae who was the daughter of the King Acrisius. Acrisius was told by an oracle that his own grandson would kill him. To prevent this, he locked Danae into a prison. However, Zeus fell in love with Danae anyway. Zeus turned into golden rain to see her. The rain landed on Danae’s lap, and she became pregnant.
King Acrisius found out about the pregnancy. When the son, Perseus, was born, the king locked Danae and Perseus into a crate and sent them to sea. Danae prayed to Zeus. He made the crate wash ashore the Seriphos Island. Dictys, a fisherman, found the two and took them home. There, he raised Perseus as his own.
Dictys had a brother named King Polydectes. He wanted to marry Danae, but Perseus wouldn’t allow it. The king came up with a plan to get rid of Perseus. King Polydectes lied and said he was engaged to another woman. For the wedding presents, Polydectes said that everyone needed to bring him horses. Perseus didn’t have any horses to give, so he had to go get the head of Medusa. She was very ugly and could turn anyone into stone. The king was sure that Perseus would die, but Perseus had the aid of the gods. Perseus was given a bronze shield, a diamond sword, an invisibility helmet, and winged shoes from the gods. Perseus killed Medusa in her sleep.
Once home, Perseus turned King Polydectes into stone with Medusa’s head. Prophecy came true when Perseus accidently hit King Acrisius with a discus. This killed Acrisius.
Perseus married Andromeda and had many children. Perseus is in the sky next to Andromeda and Cassiopeia. As a constellation, he is holding Medusa’s head and his diamond sword.
